Employer Fined for not Paying Maid's Salary


A Bruneiean man was slapped with a dfine of B$8,700 by the Bandar Magistrate's court on 1 July 2008 for failing to pay the salary of his maid for 29 months.
Awang Rosli bin Haji Sabli was produced before the court failing to pay the salary of his maid, Saropah, for two years and five months.
Under the Labour Act, Section 108(1), workers' salary have to be paid not later than 10 days from the permited date and duration and if anyone fails to do so, he/she can be charged under section 120(b) and those found guilty will face a fine of B$ 1,500 or six months; imprisonment for every offence.
In the case of Awang Rosli, he was charged with 29 counts of failing to pay the salary and the court fined him B$8,700 and at the same time ordered him to clear all the unpaid salary of the maid, which mounted to B$ 5,800. The court has given Awang Rosli time until 6 October 2008 to clear the fined and backdated salary of his maid, which add up to B$ 14,500, and if he fails to do so, he will face 87 weeks of imprisonment.
